ARIEL SCHMIDTKE'S DEATH IS THE BEGINNING.

DESCRIPTION.
South Whidbey High School graduate returns to the island in a two-person circus rife with dancing, theater, acrobatics, aerials, and puppetry.

"Death is the Beginning is a full length, multidisciplinary, theatrical circus show. Through the use of dance, theater, acrobatics, aerials and puppetry we tell the story of two creatures who form a companionship, but die shortly after. We spend the rest of the show exploring the nebulous and surreal space between life and death and rediscover each other through our travels." -- Ariel Schmidtke

NYMBOL'S SECRET ISLAND.

DESCRIPTION.

A musical extravaganza featuring puppeteers, dancers, musicians and acrobats, Nymbol’s Secret Island tells the tale of Nymbolnuts, a 215-year-old boggart with a knack for mischief, and the fantastical creatures who inhabit his mystical island home. "Nymbol’s Secret Island" was created by Sam and Bill Cass, who happen to make their home on an island as well, in Langley , Washington . The show features original songs, stories and dances performed by some of the most engaging artists in the Northwest, including a troupe of handmade leather puppets that are uncannily lifelike. In addition to the original cast, there will be a special guest for both Langley performances, and surprise dancer(s) will perform as well.

“It’s a bit of an old-fashioned word, but ‘spectacle’ is the best way to describe this show,” says Bill Cass, creator of Nymbolnuts. “The costumes, special effects, the set and the songs are on an entirely different level from what people might expect from a show like this. It must be seen to be believed.” To give you an inkling, one of the characters in the story is a 9-foot-tall troll who charges through the audience. There will be many surprise performers and magical guests -- including SJ Tucker!

Costumes are heartily encouraged for the audience – come in your faerie finery or best pirate rags and be part of the experience.

TOM CHURCHILL'S WEST IS WEST.

DESCRIPTION.

"West is West or The Great American Camel Race is set in Virginia City, Nevada in the mid-nineteen seventies. The play dramatizes the lives of seven misfits, gathering by accident with others of similar values, or lack thereof, in a decadent ghost town far above Reno and the Washoe Valley. They drink, they argue, they flirt and a significant few of them bet on the outcome of the newly re-instituted camel race through town. The race revisits an annual event that was big in the 19th c, when Mark Twain lived there and wrote for the Territorial Enterprise.

The race is real... but our version is fictionalized; and having inside info on the outcome is central to at least one of the "moral" issues of the play... It's a 'moral comedy.' Issues such as insider information, homophobia, and a sense of brotherhood are all a part of the play's meaning.

The central issue has to do with understanding the way that one's locale describes the way we think and define our identities: two half brothers, Jimmy and Orville, are the main characters... Jimmy's west coast is imprinted in him; Orville's adopted Nevada is his own best way of showing what's he's become, having escaped the "rainy gloom" of his and Jimmy's shared upbringing. Most of the issues, though given plenty of air time, are red herrings: what none of these misfits can avoid is the power of nature... earthquakes, tsunamis, the sudden appearance of a rattlesnake... and it's raw Nature that brings these two brothers momentarily together.” – Tom Churchill
