the artist MATT STATZ

While I am currently attending college in Oregon for a double major in Studio art and Political science, I have lived on Whidbey my entire life. My art really began at the age of eight, when I started taking painting lessons from a local artist, who has since then moved to Seattle .

I consider Whidbey one of the best places I could possibly have grown up, as far as artistic development goes, for our island is inundated with artists who represent a wide spectrum of mediums, styles, and sensibilities. I was able to explore numerous media under a broad range of instructors, helping me determine my preferred medium of expression.

Although I have worked in ceramics, photography, graphics, etching, and pastels, I have found oils to be my favorite mode of artistic creation. Traditionally working quite small, I have recently begun to enlarge my work, as a means of loosening my style and forcing myself to not get caught up in overly tight, finicky detail, which I feel often detracts from my pieces.

Set painting, I feel, is at the other end of the spectrum. Having done much work for our local children’s theatre, I am beginning to understand set painting, not as a tight, finished piece, but rather as an element of something larger; it is an aid to the audience, to allow them to further fall into the performance they are watching. The goal of set painting and of this Django-fest piece is not to dominate, but rather to set the mood, and compliment the performance that is taking place on stage.
