"GOD OF CARNAGE"
by Yasmina Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton
Directed by Andrew Grenier
October 14 - 29, 2011
This Tony Award-winning comedy of grownups behaving badly begins with two highly-strung couples meeting for a civil discussion about a playground fight between their sons. The conversation quickly morphs into a laugh-out-loud, train wreck of an afternoon among savages, described as “ninety minutes of sustained mayhem” by The New Yorker.
A Comedy of Manners... without the manners.
From Ramona's Blog:
"The action begins in 'God of Carnage' with a polite, civilized discussion. After a schoolyard brawl between their sons, two sets of Brooklyn parents come together to do what any other left-leaning, politically correct urbanites would do: try to reach some sort of reasonable understanding. But what starts off as an earnest attempt at conciliation soon devolves into mild anarchy. Thinly-veiled barbs are rallied, good intentions are tossed aside, and the situation quickly escalates into all-out war.
Before too long the couples are exchanging childish taunts, not unlike their own misbehaving offspring. The playwright has an ear for sharp dialogue, the kind that rolls off the tongue gently, only to hit the listener smack in the face. You’ll find yourself softly egging these characters on, even as you loudly decry their shocking loss of control and contemptible behavior. But what could easily drift toward simple screwball comedy is smartly reigned in by genuine care and subtlety, as well as several surprising moments of warmth and humility. A great many audience members, I’m sure, will recognize parts of themselves in these characters, who are at once hilarious, ridiculous, and yet somehow deeply relatable. I know I shifted in my chair uneasily a number of times while reading the script..." continue reading.
