PETER MORGAN'S "FROST / NIXON."

Directed by Richard Evans

June 08 - 23, 2012

British talk-show host David Frost has become a lowbrow laughing-stock. Richard M. Nixon has just resigned the United States presidency in total disgrace over Vietnam and the Watergate scandal. Determined to resurrect his career, Frost risks everything on a series of in-depth interviews in order to extract an apology from Nixon. The cagey Nixon, however, is equally bent on redeeming himself in his nation's eyes. In the television age, image is king, and both men are desperate to outtalk and upstage each other as the cameras roll. The result is the interview that sealed a president's legacy.

From Ramona's Blog:

"As many who were alive during the 1970′s witnessed, David Frost’s interviews with Richard Nixon represented a critical turning point in history. The nation was in tumult after it became clear that Nixon’s Committee to Re-elect the President had committed numerous legal atrocities, and political analysts feared that the entire institution of the presidency would be compromised. President Ford’s decision to grant the disgraced Nixon a full pardon only prompted further outrage. Americans were itching for a public apology, or a least an admission of guilt from the former president, but no such admission was forthcoming.

“Frost/Nixon” capitalizes gleefully on the dramatic tension of this moment, but what the play also adds to the mix is an compelling glimpse into the internal struggles, hopes, and motivations of these two key figures. Frost, a British talk show host, has watched his career slide slowly downward and hopes that by forcing out that elusive apology he can regain his former glory. Nixon has been hiding away at his estate in San Clemente, waiting out the storm but desperately missing his fast-paced East coast life. If he plays his cards right, he figures, he might be able to exonerate himself in the eyes of the people..." continue reading
