METAMORPHOSES.

Mary Zimmerman's glorious adaptation of the epic poem by Ovid explores the concept, possibilities and consequences of change.

"Metamorphoses" brings Ovid's tales to stunning visual life. Set in and around a large pool of water, Zimmerman's masterpiece juxtaposes the ancient and the contemporary in both language and image to reflect the variety and persistence of narrative in the face of inevitable change.

Mary Zimmerman, on why she chose to write a play based on stories thousands of years old says, “These myths have a redemptive power in that they are so ancient. There’s a comfort in the familiarity of the human condition.” Each vignette, and the play itself, is about change, which one can surmise from the title. These changes however are all related to love, which takes on many forms and leads the bearers to many things, both good and bad. In the end, even Midas is redeemed and is reunited with his daughter who had been turned to gold by his former love of money and power.

“[Metamorphoses] makes it easy to enter the heart and to believe in greater change as well… that we all can transform.” -- Mary Zimmerman

“… some myths keep human beings imprisoned in political and religious shackles. But other myths have redemptive power. They change the way we see our world and ourselves. Mary Zimmerman believes in the power of myth to transform, even to transform a swimming pool into an ocean of the imagination. That's what she's done… with her acclaimed play METAMORPHOSES. She's taken ancient Roman myths and brought them to life in the here and now.” – Bill Moyers

Ovid's myths leap from page to stage in Tony Award winner Mary Zimmerman's acclaimed 'Metamorphoses'

by Jennifer de Poyen, The San Diego Union-Tribune

"As a girl growing up in small-town Nebraska, Mary Zimmerman lived in a world of fairy tales and dreams. Her parents were professors who filled their house with books, and she learned early on that reading was a "magic carpet ride" that carried her far away from the fields and plains that surrounded her.

She poured over pictures of white snakes and girls in towers for hours at a stretch, committing every detail to memory. She fantasized about inventing a machine that would record her dreams, so she could watch them when she woke up.

Then one day, rummaging through her mother's floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, she discovered Edith Hamilton's "Mythology." For a 5-year-old with a vivid imagination and a keen visual sense, the ancient Greek, Roman and Norse tales were a revelation..." MORE
