JANET PHEIFER'S THE ONGOING PROCESS.
The Ongoing Process features collages of found objects and throw-away items. They are re-imagined and contrasted with handmade paper, yarn fibers, wood and wire layered together to create a unique rhythm and harmony.
"My artwork includes, but is not limited to, odd bits of discarded construction debris, buttons, beads, yarn and wire. These materials are chosen for their contrasting shapes, colors and textures. The soft handmade paper, made of anything I can run through the blender, contrasts with the hard elements. Juxtaposed, they are placed within a grid-like structure designed to create stability and balance.
The genesis for these works starts with the materials chosen which then suggest the composition. As layers are added, the work evolves and may change radically from the initial conception. The frames, made of scrap wood and hand painted, create a shadow box for the layers.
There is an emotional element to the artwork dealing with issues experienced at the time of creation and alluded to in the titles. The viewers can of course draw their own associations.
I’ve been a professional carpenter for 27 years. Having a life-long interest in arts and crafts, it is only recently that I have been able to devote more time to my artwork. Skills learned both personally and professionally have been adapted to my creative process. The love of order, precision, and fine craft are my muse." -- Janet Pheifer
