The Vagina Monologues.
Woman #1 “I bet you’re worried.”
Woman #2 “We were worried.”
Woman #3 “We were worried about vaginas.”
Woman #1 “We were worried what we think about vaginas, and even more worried that we don’t think about them. We were worried about our own vaginas. They needed a context of other vaginas -- a community, a culture of vaginas. There’s so much darkness and secrecy surrounding them-like the Bermuda Triangle. Nobody ever reports back from there.”
Through heartfelt, funny, sad, incredibly moving monologues, women from all over the world talk about what they have experienced as women-love, physical and sexual abuse, fear, the glories of childbirth, isolation, sensitive and insensitive partners. Eve Ensler interviewed hundreds of women of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities for this memorable theatrical production.
It has spawned a movement, V-Day, dedicated to combating violence against women all over the world. Each year she licenses the production to community groups to perform as fundraisers for local organizations as well as a global focus. This year’s beneficiary is South Whidbey Soroptimist-Island Girls Live Their Dreams, a free weeklong summertime day camp for girls in middle school. The camp focuses on activities that raise self-esteem in the hope that girls with self-esteem will become women who will not allow themselves to be abused. The global spotlight is directed at Women of the Democratic Republic of Congo where rape is used as a weapon of war. Our efforts fund safe houses and hospitals and increase awareness of the women of the
Congo
who are resisting violence with courage and vision.
“Spellbinding, funny, and almost unbearably moving…it is both a work of art and an incisive piece of cultural history, a poem and a polemic, a performance and a balm and a benediction.” -- Variety
