, Libana takes audiences on an incomparable musical journey. Like echoes from other times and places, Libana's stunning vocal expertise, dazzling instrumentals and exuberant dancing create a shimmering musical mosaic. In addition to their compelling a-cappella singing, the women of Libana play an array of indigenous instruments, including dumbek, accordion, oud, naqqara, creating a many-faceted, entrancing sound few world-music groups can aspire to.
The concert will benefit the NW Language Academy’s scholarship fund. Price of admission includes a $25 gift certificate towards one of NW Language Academy’s many cultural and language programs for children and adults.

The Artists
Libana performances open windows into diverse, rarely heard, women’s musical expressions from around the world. Their music ranges from exquisite Balkan harmonies to the rooted pulses of Latin American rhythms, from hauntingly beautiful sounds of Slav music from
Hungary
to a riveting ritual exorcism dance with percussion from
Egypt
- all woven into a collage of shifting colors and rhythms.

and in many other countries around the world. Turning (Spinning Records, 2009) is a passionate, earth-reverent music collection celebrating Libana’s thirty years together. Out of this World (Spinning Records, 2004) is a journey through the varied lands of women’s experience. Night Passage (Spinning Records, 2000) is a scintillating collection of soulful, soothing and joyous rounds, chants and songs that illuminate the mystery of life’s seasons. Borderland (Shanachie Records, 1993) deftly traverses borders, continents and hemispheres with a dazzling repertoire of contemporary and traditional World Folk Music. Their 1990 Ladyslipper release, Fire Within, is a richly eclectic collection of rounds, chants, and songs from around the world which will captivate and mesmerize listeners from widely diverse audiences. Fire Within and A Circle is Cast (Spinning Records, 1986) are among the best selling recordings of Ladyslipper, the largest women’s music distributor in the
United States
. Libana’s music has also been featured on NPR’s “Weekend Edition” of All Things Considered, and throughout
Canada
on the Canadian Broadcasting Co.
Founded in 1979 by director Susan Robbins, Libana is a six woman ensemble that has toured extensively throughout North America and
Canada
, and in 1996, made their European debut at the Varna International Folk Festival in
Bulgaria
