about THIS CHILD
Although a new play, many elements of This Child are very old. We are reminded by Aristotle in the Poetics that the very roots of drama are embedded deep in ritual and celebration, that familial struggle makes for the strongest conflict in the drama, that comedy and tragedy are two sides of the same mask and that irony gives drama a human touch.
In this story, all the fuss over presenting a seasonal pageant play is, in many ways, quite comical, yet is itself, celebratory and grounded in religious ritual and festivity. Whereas, the loss of a loved one is tragic under any circumstance and is a seemingly unendurable hardship, it is substantially compounded at a time of economic catastrophe and more extraordinarily arduous, when all those who surround them are swept up in seasonal activities and festivities.
Add now literate, erudite playwriting and economy of action and you have the constituent elements for excellence in drama and the play that is about to be presented to you: an experience in the transcendence of the human spirit over seemingly indifferent vicissitude and suffering.
May your seasonal celebration begin with this evening’s presentation of This Child. From all of us to all of you, have a joyous yuletide and a happy holiday.
Jack Green, Director
